When one long, hot summer, young Leo is staying with a school-friend at Brandham Hall, he begins to act as a messenger between Ted, the farmer, and Marian, the beautiful young woman up at the hall. He becomes drawn deeper and deeper into their dangerous game of deceit and desire, until his role brings him to a shocking and premature revelation. The haunting story of a young boy`s awakening into the secrets of the adult world, The Go-Between is also an unforgettable evocation of the boundaries of Edwardian society. It was adapted into an internationally-successful film starring Julie Christie and Alan Bates. |

The funeral of Edward’s mother brings him home for the first time in years. Though his return rekindles his affection for his childhood home, it also triggers a resurgence of the family tensions that caused him to leave in the first place. As Edward becomes tangled in his family’s web of corrosive secrets, his homecoming tips a precariously balanced dynamic into sudden chaos. The Italian Girl is Murdoch’s compelling story of a man’s reunion with his estranged family, and of the tragedy that shocks them all into confronting their dark past. |

This book was published in 1967. It was part of an admirable series published around that year by Penguin on new writing in Cuba, the rest of Latin America, England, the U.S., France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Africa and South Africa, with one volume devoted to each place. The book on the U.S. offered 67 works by 33 writers, from 1958 to 1967. There were 50 poems and 4 excerpts from poems, 6 stories, 4 excerpts from novels, 2 essays and 1 short play. The poetry comprised about half of the pages, a much more generous selection than for the other books in the Penguin series. Unlike the other books from Penguin, which featured a wide range of different types of writing, the book on the U.S. was a selection by editors Donald Allen and Robert Creeley of their compatriots from the Beat Generation, Black Mountain College, SF, NYC and a few other places. Many of these authors were also included in Allen’s landmark earlier anthology --- New American Poetry (1960) --- and his later update of it ---- The Postmoderns (1982). So fans of those books might also enjoy this one. |

McCarthy Mary | |
Mary McCarthy s most celebrated novel follows the lives of eight Vassar graduates, known simply to their classmates as "the group." An eclectic mix of personalities and upbringings, they meet a week after graduation to watch Kay Strong get married. After the ceremony, the women begin their adult lives: traveling to Europe, tackling the worlds of nursing and publishing, and finding love and heartbreak in the streets of New York City. Through the years, some of the friends grow apart and some become entangled in each other s affairs, but all vow not to become like their mothers and fathers. It is only when one of them passes away that they all come back together again to mourn the loss of a friend, a confidante, and most importantly, a member of the group. |

Cave Nick | |
Outcast, mute, a lone twin cut from a drunk mother in a shack full of junk, Euchrid Eucrow of Ukulore inhabits a nightmarish Southern valley of preachers and prophets, incest and ignorance. When the God-fearing folk of the town declare a foundling child to be chosen by the Almighty, Euchrid is disturbed. He sees her very differently, and his conviction, and increasing isolation and insanity, may have terrible consequences for them both... In 2009 Cave released a cut-down version of his novel but this reissue restores the full uncut text, as first published in 1989. Compelling and astonishing in its baroque richness, Nick Cave`s acclaimed first novel is a fantastic journey into the twisted world of Deep Southern Gothic tragedy. This book will be adored by readers of Will Self, William Faulkner and Falnnery O`Connor, as well as fans of the cult rock star everywhere. |

Borowski Tadeusz | |
Tadeusz Borowski’s concentration camp stories were based on his own experiences surviving Auschwitz and Dachau. In spare, brutal prose he describes a world where where the will to survive overrides compassion and prisoners eat, work and sleep a few yards from where others are murdered, where the difference between human beings is reduced to a second bowl of soup, an extra blanket or the luxury of a pair of shoes with thick soles, and where the line between normality and abnormality vanishes. Published in Poland after the Second World War, these stories constitute a masterwork of world literature. |
